Today, I had to leave work early to watch my son for the afternoon. He and I don’t do a lot of “alone time” and still even after 6 months, I’m always a little nervous about being left to care for him. Mainly because I have to make all the decisions, and for someone who is not the primary care giver, it can be difficult to know what is best (particularly for babies who don’t use their words.)
Still, this afternoon it was just us boys and I have to say that it has gone just fine. We played (well, he played, I made funny faces and kept him from falling). We ate (well,,, he made a mess and I cleaned him up). We slept (well,,,,,,he slept,,, I did dishes and am now blogging to avoid more chores). And I have to say that all of this went fine without any fussing or meltdowns.
More importantly it is giving me the confidence boost I will need for what will undoubtably be my first “big test” as a father. Next week Tristan’s mother will be leaving the state for a few days and it will be up to me (ok, with a little help from the grandmothers) to keep my son alive, full, dry, and away from power tools. I’m hoping that this afternoon is a prequel to the epic saga that will be known forever as “The Weekend with No Mommy“.
I’ll keep you all posed, unless of course things don’t go well. In which case you may never hear from me again.
